The Headlight Yellow Sally is a fry fly, fly fishermen use during the warm months, when these insects are abundant on the water. Here in the Great Smoky Mountains, we love Yellow Sally stonefly patterns. It’s probably true elsewhere as well. The Yellow Sally stone is our most prolific and active aquatic insect. There are none we know of in the mountain streams that are present on the water as long and as often. Trout gorge on these insects most often late in the afternoons and just before dark. The Headlight Yellow Sally is a very good extended body imitation that fly fishermen should always have in their fly box during the late Spring, Summer and early Fall.
