Description
I prefer monofilament leaders for poppers and foam top water flies. Monofilament does not sink quickly. A sunken leader can pull your top water fly under, when you pull it off the water, to make another cast. In some cases, a popper or top water fly could become snagged on a limb or a rock on the bottom of the stream. Pulling a topwater fly under water, can also spook smallmouth bass that are nearby.
I fish with top water flies as often as they work. That is the type of fishing I enjoy most.
I have used Orvis tapered monofilament leaders for over 35 years. I have not tried another brand.
This leader has a strength of almost 10 pound test. It is perfect for casting large poppers, or when fishing near structure such as logs and limbs. I prefer 8 pound 3X leaders under most conditions. However, 8 pound test has it’s limits as to the size of poppers you can cast.
