Orvis fly line backing is braided Dacron and is available in either 20 lb or 30 lb strengths.  Backing is used to fill up fly reel spools on smaller line sizes.  For fishing situations where you will be catching larger, further running species it gives you hundreds of extra yards of line to help you get control over the fish.

20 lb. test is for trout and most other freshwater fishing situations.
30 lb. test is for saltwater fishing especially 9wt and larger.
