There is nothing quite as exciting as fly fishing during the early Spring, when the blue quills are hatching. In the Smoky Mountains, the water temperature may reach a point as early as late February, when Blue Quills and Quill Gordon mayflies hatch. More often, that occurs in March. During that time you may see trout feeding on Quill Gordon adults or the smaller Blue Quills. Any fly fisherman, who is planning to fish the early hatches of grey mayflies, should have Blue Quill patterns ready to fish.
