I can’t think of a better sub-surface bluegill fly fishing fly, than Carter’s Rubber Legged Dragon, in Black or Olive. The fly represents a dragonfly nymph. The fly was the brainchild of Carter Nelson, who guided at the time at Calloway Gardens. The lakes at Calloway are known for their huge bluegill. The secret to this fly is, it gets down, where the larger panfish are found. The rubber legs give the fly action. When I use them, I cast and let the fly sink, then begin a slow retrieve. Keep your floating fly line tight, so you can feel the strike. Seriously, no warmwater fly fisherman, who targets all the sunfishes, should be without Carter’s Rubber Legged Dragon, in Black and Olive. I tie them in other colors too. I have caught a lot of bass on these flies. Tied in size #10.
