Green Weenie Fly

Green Weenie Fly

Starting At:
$2.09

I have been waiting to get to this fly, adding it to our online store. I love writing about the Green Weenie. During the Summer months, I mention the Green Weenie almost every day on the Fishing Report. There is a reason for that. This fly is one of the best Smoky Mountain patterns we sell or I have used.

The Green Weenie is tied locally just for us. We can’t buy this version from our fly companies. It is one of our best selling flies. It mimics what locals call the sourwood worm. It’s an inchworm too.

Joe Humphreys was in our shop one day. He and I were looking at flies. He told me, his best friend, George Harvey came up with this pattern years ago. Joe also said, the loop in the back is the key to the fly’s success. The loop gives the fly a swinging action.

I highly recommend this fly when fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains during the Summer and early Fall. It makes a good dropper, attached to a Yellow Neversink Caddis. You can add split shot to get it down. That works well too. You may use a strike indicator or dredge the depths without one.

One thing I have noticed over the years is, you can see this bright fly in the water. You often see trout following it. We also sell a pink version called the Pink Weenie or Barbie Bug. It is very effective for brown, rainbow and especially brook trout.

This is an awesome trout fly. Don’t go fishing in the Smokies during the Summer without them.

Available in size #12.
