Description
New Zealand Strike Indicators are a fairly new concept, designed and made for fly fishing for picky trout in clear water, as well as other fly fishing situations.
Multiple times a day, fly fishing anglers ask “what kind of indicators do you like best?” We all seem to like different indicators based on our situations, but we have found this indicator system is very versatile and practical. If you like using yarn indicators, you will like this system.New Zealand Strike Indicators are “Super Sensitive”. You see takes you may not see when using a hard indicator. Wool indicators detect even the most subtle takes.
The New Zealand Strike Indicators Kit comes with a generous wad of wool yarn, a little tool that resembles a crochet hook, and some very thin diameter plastic tubing. The plastic tubing takes the place of that half hitch knot that you are accustomed to using for a yarn indicator. The New Zealand Indicators have all the characteristics that an indicator should have: high floating, easy to cast, easily adjustable, sensitive, and the don’t weaken your leader. The wool floats on its own, but add your favorite gel floatant and it will float even longer.
If you are fly fishing on a tailwater or spring creek, for picky trout, trim the indicator yarn down to small size. If you are fishing a heavily weighted nymph setup in some pocket water in the mountains, use a larger piece of yarn to float with the additional weight of the larger nymph.
A good way to start using New Zealand Strike Indicators is by buying this kit. The kit sells for $17.95 and comes with everything you need, and the amount of wool included will last a long time, since it is re-useable.
As needed, you can buy yarn and tubing material later or stock up now.
We stock all the New Zealand Strike Indicator components on this website and in our shop.
