Of all the Walt’s poppers, Black Jack is my favorite when fly fishing for smallmouth and largemouth bass. I’ve always done well with black flies when fishing for smallmouth bass. It’s my #1 color.

We bought these flies for years from Walt Cary, who made them in his shop to sell to dealers. Walt retired after 50 years of making poppers. I read he actually made 1,000 dozen per year, by himself. I can’t imagine doing that. When I called him to order more bugs, we always talked for a while. Maybe he was waiting for paint to dry.

Today, Walt’s Poppers are made by Solitude Fly Company, who pay a royalty to Walt for each fly they sell.

I recommend the Walt’s Black Jack poppers for smallmouth bass. I would choose the #6 or #4 size for most of the fishing I do. However, the #8 would be a good choice for fishing in small streams where the bass are smaller and your chances for catching rock bass and sunfish are good.
