The Wooly Bugger might be the most versatile fly in the world. It works on trout, bluegill, crappie, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and pretty much any fish that isn't a vegetarian. This version is tied without a bead, and has an added touch of flash for a little extra shimmer.

A few years ago, I was standing next to a good friend of mine while he was sight casting to a wild 24" Smoky Mountain Brown. After running quite a few nymphs past his face without success, he looked at me and shrugged his shoulders. Being out of options myself, I asked him if he had any black Wooly Buggers without a bead. He reached into his box and pulled out this fly. Two casts later, we were chasing a monster Brown Trout all over Little River. We ended up netting the fish, measuring him and taking his photo, and sending him on his way, all thanks to this fly. Add a few of these to your fly box, no matter what kind of fish you're chasing.
